CELLS alive! Download FAQs
Will the downloads work on my computer?
Every step is taken to ensure that the downloads are compatible with both Windows and Mac OS. That said, downloads require QuickTime (for video clips) or Flash Player (for interactive animations). You will also need the ability to extract ZIPped archives.
How quickly will I receive my download?
Immediately if you pay by credit card. However, there can be a delay of 3-4 days if you pay by "eCheck" or from an existing PayPal account with insufficient funds to cover the purchase.
The downloaded file is corrupted. Why?
There are two possible explanations. First, you may have an older or corrupted web browser. This can be corrected by installing the latest version of Firefox (recommended), Netscape, Internet Explorer, or on Mac OS X, Safari. Second, if you are behind a firewall, that may interfere with the download. You may need to consult your system administrator for help or log in and access the files from another location.
Can I install downloads on my classroom network?
Only the multi-user versions of the interactive Flash animations. No video clip downloads may be installed on a classroom network (Terms and Conditions). Video clips for use on a classroom network are available on the Multi-User CDROM.
I teach biology. Can I get free downloads?
Unfortunately, no. Since 1994, CELLS alive! has been provided free of charge to anyone with Internet access. But hosting up to 25,000 visitors a day is not free. Educators and students who purchase downloads and CDROMs are providing for continued and reliable free access to everyone.
PayPal did not accept my credit card but I know the credit account is in good standing.
This seems to be most frequent when using Purchase Cards (PCards) supplied by schools or universities. For security, certain online purchases may be blocked on your card. If using a different card is not an option, you may make the purchase directly from Quill Graphics by telephone, fax or mail. Contact us for instructions using the email link at the bottom of this page.
I made a purchase through PayPal but am told there is a delay for funds to clear. Why?
This can happen for one of two reasons. Either you paid by “echeck” drawn on your bank account, or from an existing PayPal account with insufficient funds to cover the purchase. Either way, PayPal must wait for funds from your bank before the purchase can be completed. This delay can be avoided if payment is made using a credit card.
Why is access limited to two days?
Most downloads are completed within minutes of the purchase. In case of a network problem, however, two days access is granted to ensure success. Once you have the files archived on your computer, they are yours to keep, and future access is unnecessary. If you are experiencing any problems after two days, contact Jim.
